Cover letter for a civil service exam: what the panel wants
For an exam, the letter does not sell experience: it shows you know the service you are joining, its duties and what public service expects of you.

Cover letter or formal application?
Many direct entry exams only ask for a formal application, sometimes handwritten, as stated in the official notice. A cover letter is mostly requested for file-based selection and schools. The notice is the reference.
What panels value
- Precise knowledge of the job.
- A concrete link to your background.
- Public service values shown with a fact.
| Method | Cost | Strength | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handwrite everything | Cost of paper | Required for some handwritten requests | Crossings-out, no digital copy |
| Typing shop or cybercafé | Paid per page | Neat layout | Cost repeated for every exam |
| Word / Google Docs | Free | Editable at will | You build your own layout |
| EmploiZen | Free CV and letter outline | CV and letter reusable from one exam to the next | Does not replace a handwritten request when one is required |
The official notice for each exam is the reference for the list of documents: read all of it before preparing anything.
Example paragraph
Teacher recruitment
"For two years I gave free maths lessons to JHS 3 pupils in my area; 14 of 18 passed the BECE. That is why I want to teach in public schools, including outside the big cities."
